Our Story

From the Community, For the Community

Healing Los Angeles Together was not conceptualized in a corporate boardroom or born out of academic theory. It was forged on the pavement of South Los Angeles.

Our founder, Herminia Galvez, knows the labyrinth of the streets because she survived it. Having achieved 15 years of sustained sobriety after nearly a decade battling addiction and the grueling realities of the carceral system, Herminia understands the paralyzing weight of mental health struggles, homelessness, and systemic reentry barriers. She knows what it means to be locked out and left behind.

In 2017, the systemic failure of Los Angeles struck with devastating personal force when Herminia lost her mother to the streets. That profound tragedy became a relentless catalyst. It deepened an advocacy journey that began when she was just 16 years old, transforming acute personal pain into an unyielding organizational purpose: to ensure that absolutely no one in Los Angeles County has to navigate trauma, eviction, or addiction alone. We built the organization we desperately needed when we were fighting for our own lives.
